What is Brazing?

Brazing is one of several processes by which two or more metals are joined. Filler metals are heated to temperatures above melting point while protected by a flux or other suitable atmosphere, after which it is flowed into the joint where it’s cooled and solidified. Brazing differs from soldering in that higher temperatures are used, and also differs from welding in that the work pieces are not melted.

The Advantages of Brazing

Brazing has multiple advantages over other metal-joining techniques, some of which include:

  • Capable of joining different metals and non-metals together with considerable strength
  • Produces a clean joint without requiring secondary finishing
  • Produces less thermal distortion
  • Cost-effective joining of complex and multi-part assemblies
  • Can be coated or clad for protective purposes
  • Less sensitive to variation, allowing for mass production and automation

Types of Braze Alloys

Various alloys can be used as filler metals for brazing purposes, including silver brazing alloys. Depending on your intended use or application method, other brazing alloys include:

  • Aluminium-silicon
  • Copper
  • Brass
  • Bronze
  • Gold-silver
  • Nickel alloy
  • And more

Manual brazing typically uses a brazing rod or wire due to the easy application. Other forms include ribbons, powders, pastes, creams and preforms.
